MUC — Munich — Taxi Fare Guide
Munich Airport (MUC) has official taxi ranks outside both terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) and the central München Airport Center. Munich taxis are metered, and because the airport sits about 35 km northeast of the city, the fare into central Munich is substantial. There is no general flat fare to most hotels.
Expect roughly €70-€90 to the city centre (Marienplatz / Altstadt), set by the meter. The tariff starts at about €4.50 base, then charges roughly €2.00 per kilometre. A night surcharge applies between 22:00 and 06:00 on some tariffs, and large luggage or extra passengers may add small supplements.
Munich does offer a limited number of fixed 'zone' fares from the airport to specific areas such as the Hauptbahnhof (main station) zone and the trade-fair (Messe) zone, but if your destination lies outside those zones you pay the metered rate. Journey time is usually 40-50 minutes, longer during rush hour or events like Oktoberfest.
Ride-hailing apps FreeNow, Uber and Bolt operate at MUC and can be slightly cheaper off-peak, but surge pricing applies. Many travellers instead take the S-Bahn (S1 or S8), which reaches the city centre in about 40 minutes for a fraction of the taxi fare.

Practical tips: Use only the official taxi ranks and check whether a fixed zone fare applies to your destination before you set off. Confirm card acceptance in advance, and factor a night surcharge for late arrivals. For big savings, the S1/S8 S-Bahn is the smart budget option into central Munich.
Other ways to the city
Munich Airport has its own S-Bahn station and a fast coach link, and both are much cheaper than a taxi. A single airport ticket covering zones M-5 costs roughly EUR 14, and a day ticket around EUR 15-16 is often better value:
- S-Bahn line S1 - runs via Neufahrn and Moosach to the Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz in about 45 minutes. Note the train splits at Neufahrn, so board the correct portion.
- S-Bahn line S8 - the eastern route via Ismaning and Ostbahnhof to Marienplatz and the Hauptbahnhof, also around 40-45 minutes. Between S1 and S8 there is a train roughly every 10 minutes.
- Lufthansa Express Bus - a direct coach to Munich Hauptbahnhof and Nordfriedhof in about 45 minutes for roughly EUR 13-15, open to passengers of any airline. Comfortable with large luggage.
- Regional bus 635 and local services - link the airport with Freising and Erding, where you can pick up regional trains north and east.
- Night services - the S1 and S8 run through much of the night at reduced frequency, plus night bus routes to the city, so you are not stranded after a late arrival.
If you are heading straight to Salzburg, Nuremberg or Regensburg, take the S-Bahn to the Hauptbahnhof and continue by regional or ICE train.
