IST — Istanbul (Istanbul Airport) — Taxi Fare Guide
Official yellow taxis (and larger black/turquoise taxis) queue at the managed taxi ranks outside the arrivals level at Istanbul Airport (IST). Fares are metered, not flat: the 2026 tariff is roughly a 65 TL flag drop, about 43 TL per kilometre, and a minimum fare of around 210 TL. Istanbul has no separate night tariff.
Because IST is far northwest of the city (about 40-50 km from the centre), the meter climbs and motorway and bridge/tunnel tolls are added to your fare — the Northern Marmara motorway, and if crossing to the old city or Asian side, the bridge and Eurasia Tunnel charges. Realistically, expect around 1,800-2,100 TL to Taksim and about 2,300-2,600 TL to Sultanahmet, with journeys of 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. Black and XL taxis cost more than standard yellow cabs.
To avoid disputes, use the BiTaksi or iTaksi apps, which hail a licensed metered taxi and show the route; Uber in Istanbul also dispatches licensed yellow/black taxis rather than private cars. Insist the meter is switched on.
| Destination | Approx. fare | Time |
| Taksim / Şişli (city centre) | 1,800-2,100 TL (incl. tolls) | 45-60 min |
| Sultanahmet (old city) | 2,300-2,600 TL (incl. tolls) | 60-75 min |
| Levent / Maslak (business) | 1,700-2,000 TL | 45-65 min |
| Kadıköy (Asian side) | 2,300-2,800 TL (incl. tolls) | 70-100 min |
Practical tips: Make sure the driver starts the meter (taksimetre) immediately and don't accept a fixed price quoted upfront, which is usually higher. Tolls are legitimately added, but ask for a route without unnecessary detours. Have some cash, though many taxis now take cards and apps. Fares are approximate and vary with traffic and tolls.
