Official NYC yellow taxis wait at clearly marked, dispatcher-managed taxi ranks outside each JFK terminal's arrivals level. Never accept a ride from touts inside the terminal; only use the yellow cabs from the official stand, where an attendant assigns your cab.

Trips between JFK and Manhattan use a government-set flat fare of $70 (shown on the meter as "Rate #2 – JFK Airport"). This covers up to four passengers and all luggage, but it is not the final price. Added on top are the New York State congestion surcharge ($2.50), a $1.00 MTA/state surcharge, a $1.00 improvement surcharge, the new MTA congestion toll, any bridge or tunnel toll (about $6.50-$11), and a $5 peak surcharge on weekdays 4-8pm. With a customary 15-20% tip, plan on roughly $85-105 total to Manhattan. Destinations in Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx are metered (not flat), starting at a $3.00 flag drop.

Travel time to Midtown is usually 45-75 minutes, and can exceed an hour during weekday rush. Ride-hailing (Uber and Lyft) is widely available with designated pickup zones; app prices swing with surge pricing and are often $70-120+ to Manhattan, sometimes cheaper off-peak, pricier during surge.

DestinationApprox. fareTime
Manhattan (Midtown / Times Sq.)$70 flat + tolls/surcharges + tip ≈ $90-10550-75 min
Lower Manhattan / Financial District$70 flat + tolls + tip ≈ $90-10545-70 min
Downtown Brooklynmetered ≈ $55-70 + tip35-55 min
LaGuardia Airport (LGA)metered ≈ $45-60 + tolls20-40 min

Practical tips: Confirm the meter shows "Rate #2 – JFK Airport" before departing to lock in the $70 flat rate to Manhattan. Tolls and the peak surcharge are legitimate add-ons; tipping 15-20% is expected. Pay by card (all cabs accept it) if you prefer. Fares are approximate and vary with traffic, tolls and time of day.
