EWR — Newark Liberty (New York) — Taxi Fare Guide
Licensed taxis queue at the ground transportation curb outside each terminal at Newark Liberty. Unlike JFK, there is no single flat fare to Manhattan; New Jersey cabs run on a meter, and the total is built from the metered fare plus a mandatory USD 20 inter-state surcharge for crossing into New York, tolls and tip. Newark taxis to New Jersey destinations use published zone-based flat rates instead.
The meter starts at USD 3.50 and adds 50 cents per quarter mile. Expect a metered base of roughly USD 50-75 to Manhattan, plus the USD 20 Newark surcharge, USD 13-17 in Lincoln or Holland Tunnel tolls, and a small congestion fee. Trips to the East Side of Manhattan add USD 5, and a USD 10 rush-hour surcharge applies on weekday peaks. Bags are about USD 1 each.
Ride-hailing (Uber and Lyft) is very popular here and is often comparable to or cheaper than a taxi off-peak, though surge pricing during storms or rush hour can push it higher than a cab. Pickup is from the designated app pickup zones.
| Destination | Approx. fare | Time |
| Midtown / Times Square (all-in) | USD 70-110 | 30-60 min |
| Lower Manhattan / Financial District | USD 65-100 | 30-50 min |
| Upper East Side (+USD 5 zone) | USD 80-120 | 40-60 min |
| Jersey City / Hoboken | USD 30-45 | 15-25 min |
Practical tips: Confirm that tolls and the USD 20 surcharge will be added on top of the meter, as these are legitimate. Ask about the flat zone rate if your destination is in New Jersey. Tip 15-20%, budget extra time for the tunnels at rush hour, and note that MTA congestion pricing may add a fee for trips into Manhattan below 60th Street.
