Miami-Dade County licenses the taxis at MIA and operates a mix of flat rates and metered fares. Flat (fixed) rates apply on trips between the airport and popular destinations such as Miami Beach, Key Biscayne and the Port of Miami, while trips to other areas run on the meter. The official taxi stands are on the arrivals level outside baggage claim.

The best-known flat fare is about $35 to South Beach (roughly the 1st to 28th Street zone); mid- and north-beach zones cost a little more. Metered trips start at $2.95 for the first 1/6 mile and then charge per additional 1/6 mile. For any trip beginning at MIA there is a $2 airport surcharge and a $15 minimum fare, plus a 30% surcharge for large SUVs and vans.

Ride-hailing is very popular here: Uber and Lyft pick up at designated rideshare zones on the arrivals level and are often cheaper than a taxi to Downtown, though prices surge at peak times. Tipping about 15% is customary for taxis; there is no extra charge for luggage or additional passengers.

DestinationApprox. fareTime
South Beach (flat rate)~$35 flat20-30 min
Downtown Miami / Brickell~$25 (metered)15-20 min
Port of Miami (flat rate)~$27 flat20-25 min
Key Biscayne (flat rate)~$45 flat25-35 min

Practical tips: Confirm whether your destination is a flat-rate zone before you set off and ask for the fixed price up front. Taxis accept credit and debit cards, but carry a little cash as a backup and always take the official rank rather than an unlicensed driver.
