VIE — Vienna — Taxi Fare Guide
Vienna Airport (VIE) is in Schwechat, about 18-20 km southeast of the city centre. Vienna's licensed radio-taxi companies offer fixed-price airport transfers that you book in advance, giving a guaranteed fare regardless of traffic. This is the recommended, transparent option and the norm for airport runs.
Typical fixed prices to the city centre (1st-9th districts) are around €36-€42 for up to four passengers: Taxi 40 100 charges about €42, and Taxi 31 300 about €37 when booked via app. Private airport-taxi firms advertise fixed fares from roughly €27-€38. A metered taxi taken spontaneously from the rank without pre-booking can cost more and is less predictable.
Importantly, when booking always request an airport cab; otherwise an extra fee of around €18 may be added for the taxi's empty return journey to Vienna. The trip takes about 20-30 minutes. Confirm the price and passenger count when you book, and note fixed prices usually cover the central districts only.
Ride-hailing apps Uber, Bolt and FreeNow all operate at VIE with designated pickup zones and are often competitive, though they surge at peak times. Budget travellers can instead take the City Airport Train (CAT) or the S7 suburban train, both far cheaper than any taxi.
| Destination | Approx. fare | Time |
| City centre (1st district / Stephansplatz) | €36-€42 (fixed) | 20-30 min |
| Districts 2-9 (inner Vienna) | €38-€45 (fixed) | 20-30 min |
| Schönbrunn / western districts | €40-€50 | 25-35 min |
| Vienna Hauptbahnhof | €35-€42 | 20-25 min |
Practical tips: Book a fixed-price airport taxi in advance and specifically ask for an 'airport cab' to avoid the ~€18 empty-return surcharge. Confirm the flat fare and how many passengers it covers. Cards are widely accepted. For the cheapest ride into town, the CAT or S7 train is excellent value.
