KEF — Reykjavik (Keflavík) — Taxi Fare Guide

Reykjavik, Iceland

Keflavík is Iceland's main international gateway, but it sits about 50 km southwest of Reykjavík, so a taxi is one of the most expensive airport transfers in Europe. Official taxis wait outside the Arrivals hall and are metered; the airport does not set a single fixed price, but advises passengers to agree a fare or request a price estimate before the journey begins. Expect roughly ISK 18,000–22,000 (about USD 130–160) to a downtown hotel during the day.

Iceland has no ride-hailing in the usual sense — Uber and Bolt do not operate, and the local app Hopp covers scooters, not cars. Taxis are booked through companies such as Hreyfill (tel. +354 588 5522) or BSR, or hailed at the rank. Fares are metered, and night, weekend and holiday rates are noticeably higher, with distance charges rising sharply outside daytime hours. Because of this, the overwhelming majority of visitors use the Flybus coach.

The Flybus departs 35–45 minutes after each flight arrival, takes about 45 minutes to the BSÍ bus terminal, and costs ISK 3,999 per adult; the "Flybus+" option that drops you at your hotel is about ISK 5,299. Children under 6 travel free. It is the most cost-effective way into town, and for two or three people it is dramatically cheaper than a taxi.

Practical tips: Bring a card — Icelandic taxis and the Flybus both accept contactless, and cash is rarely needed. Book the Flybus online in advance to guarantee a seat; the ticket is valid on any departure. If you do take a taxi, ask for the estimate up front, and remember tipping is not expected in Iceland.

💡 Fares shown are approximate estimates and can vary with traffic, time of day, luggage and operator. Always confirm the price before your trip and use official, licensed taxis or a pre-booked transfer.
