Cancún airport taxis operate under a fixed, zone-based tariff and are the only ground transport authorized to pick up directly at the terminals. Buy a prepaid ticket at the official transportation desk inside the arrivals hall before you exit; this locks in the price and avoids the aggressive touts and timeshare hawkers who approach arriving passengers. To the Hotel Zone expect roughly 750–1,100 MXN (US$40–60); to downtown Cancún (El Centro) roughly 600–850 MXN. Rates are per vehicle, not per person.
For longer transfers, an authorized taxi or private van to Playa del Carmen runs about 1,000–1,500 MXN (roughly 1 hour) and to Tulum about 1,800–2,500 MXN (roughly 2 hours). Highway tolls on the 305D to Playa/Tulum are typically included in the quoted airport rate; always confirm before boarding. There is no meter — the price is fixed by destination zone.
Ride-hailing is legally contested at CUN. Although a court ruling allowed Uber to operate, in practice very few drivers accept airport pickups due to pressure from the taxi union, and a November 2025 Supreme Court decision reaffirmed that ride-hailing is not authorized at Mexican airports. DiDi also does not reliably serve the airport. Both apps work well within Cancún city and are cheaper than street taxis, so many travelers take the official taxi or ADO bus in, then use apps locally.

Practical tips: Only use taxis booked at the official airport counter or a pre-arranged transfer with a name sign. Agree on the price and currency (pesos are cheaper than paying in USD) before you get in. Have small bills; tips are appreciated but not required. Book ahead in high season, and for budget travel take the ADO bus instead.
Other ways to the city
ADO bus is the cheapest and most reliable option from CUN. ADO operates modern air-conditioned coaches from stops outside each terminal to fixed stations only (it does not stop at hotels). To downtown Cancún (ADO bus station, El Centro) tickets are about 140 MXN (US$7–8) and take roughly 30–40 minutes, running frequently through the day.
