Best Ride-Hailing & Taxi Apps Worldwide

One of the most common travel mistakes is assuming Uber works everywhere. It doesn't. Land in Istanbul, Seoul or Nairobi and open Uber, and you might find no cars, inflated prices, or an app that simply isn't allowed to operate. Every region has its own dominant player, and knowing which app to install before you fly can save you money, time and a lot of airport stress. This guide covers the apps that actually work, region by region.

Why Uber Isn't the Universal Answer

Uber is genuinely useful across most of the United States, parts of Latin America and much of Western Europe. But regulation, local competition and market exits mean it's often the wrong tool. In Southeast Asia, Uber sold its business to Grab years ago. In China it merged into Didi. In Turkey it operates only through licensed yellow taxis. Relying on a single app abroad is a recipe for standing at the curb with no ride.

The App That Works, By Region

North America

Uber and Lyft both work well across the US and Canada. Coverage and pricing are similar, so many travelers keep both installed and compare fares before booking.

Europe

Bolt is often cheaper than Uber and dominant in Eastern and Northern Europe. Free Now connects you to licensed local taxis in Germany, the UK, Ireland and beyond. Gett is popular for taxis in the UK and Israel. Uber still works in many capitals, so it's worth having as a backup.

Turkey

BiTaksi is the go-to app in Istanbul and other major cities, hailing licensed metered taxis. iTaksi is Istanbul's official municipality-backed app. Uber in Turkey only dispatches licensed yellow taxis, so BiTaksi usually gives you more cars faster.

Middle East

Careem (owned by Uber but run locally) is the regional leader across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan. Uber also works in the Gulf, so keep both.

Southeast Asia

Grab is the everything-app here, covering rides, food and payments across Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. There is no serious alternative for most travelers.

China

Didi rules China. There's an English-language interface, but you'll need a working mobile number and ideally a local payment method or an international card linked in advance.

India

Ola competes head-to-head with Uber across India. Both work; Ola often has wider coverage in smaller cities and offers auto-rickshaws through the app.

East Asia

Kakao T is essential in South Korea, hailing regular taxis with an English option. In Japan, GO is the leading taxi app; Uber exists but mostly just dispatches taxis at similar prices.

Spain & Latin America

Cabify is strong in Spain, Mexico, Colombia and beyond. Didi has expanded aggressively across Mexico and Brazil and is frequently the cheapest option there.

Practical Tips Before You Travel

  • Download before you fly. Airport Wi-Fi and SIM setup can be slow. Install and register the right app while you still have reliable internet at home.
  • Link a card in advance. Many apps require verification steps that fail on airport Wi-Fi. Add your payment method before departure so you can book on arrival.
  • Find the designated pickup zone. Most major airports send app rides to a specific ride-hailing lot, often different from the taxi rank. Follow the signs and check the app's in-terminal instructions rather than waiting at departures or the closest curb.
  • Keep one backup app. Surge pricing, cancellations and low driver supply happen. A second installed app is cheap insurance.

When Local Taxis Still Win

Apps aren't always best. Official airport taxis with fixed or metered fares can be faster and cheaper than surge-priced app rides during peak hours or bad weather. In some cities, apps are banned or unreliable near the terminal, and a licensed rank taxi is the safe choice. For late-night arrivals with no data connection, a marked taxi at the official stand beats fumbling with an app that won't load. Always use the official, marked rank and confirm the meter is running or agree the fare first.

Quick Region-to-App Reference

  • USA & Canada: Uber, Lyft
  • Europe: Bolt, Free Now, Uber, Gett
  • Turkey: BiTaksi, iTaksi
  • Middle East: Careem, Uber
  • Southeast Asia: Grab
  • China: Didi
  • India: Ola, Uber
  • South Korea: Kakao T
  • Japan: GO
  • Spain & Latin America: Cabify, Didi, Uber

The rule is simple: research the one app that dominates your destination, install it before you leave, link a card, and keep a backup ready. Do that, and getting from the airport to your hotel becomes the easiest part of the trip.

Prices and opening hours are approximate and change — always check official websites before you visit.
