3 Days in Vancouver

Few cities blend nature and urban life as gracefully as Vancouver. Set between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, it offers rainforest trails, seawall bike paths, a thriving food scene and a genuinely relaxed West Coast pace. It is compact enough to explore on foot and by transit, and its greatest attraction, the outdoors, is always close at hand. Three days let you balance city sights with the mountains and water that define the region, without ever feeling rushed.

Getting from the airport

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) sits about 12 kilometres south of downtown on Sea Island. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs directly into the city in around 25 minutes and is excellent value, but with luggage, a group or a late arrival, a taxi is simpler and drops you at the door. Fares downtown are metered and reasonably predictable. To compare your options in advance, see our guide to airport taxi fares.

Day 1

Morning

Start in Stanley Park, the green heart of the city. Rent a bike and ride the 9-kilometre seawall loop, passing the totem poles at Brockton Point and enjoying views of the harbour, the mountains and the Lions Gate Bridge.

Afternoon

Head into the West End and Coal Harbour for lunch, then explore downtown and the historic streets of Gastown, with its cobblestones, cast-iron lamps and the famous steam clock.

Evening

Have dinner in Gastown or nearby Chinatown, both full of characterful restaurants and bars. The area comes alive in the evening and is an easy, walkable way to end your first day.

Day 2

Morning

Cross to the North Shore for a dose of rainforest. Visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge, or for a free alternative, the equally dramatic Lynn Canyon, where trails wind through towering old-growth trees.

Afternoon

Ride the gondola up Grouse Mountain for sweeping views over the city and the water. In summer there are hiking trails and wildlife refuges at the top; in winter it becomes a ski hill within the city limits.

Evening

Return downtown and unwind along the waterfront. Grab dinner in Yaletown, a converted warehouse district by the water that is now one of the city's most popular dining and drinks neighbourhoods.

Day 3

Morning

Take the little ferry across to Granville Island. Its public market is a highlight, packed with fresh produce, seafood, bakeries and artisan stalls, perfect for grazing your way through breakfast.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon at Kitsilano Beach or in the surrounding neighbourhood, known for its laid-back cafes and boutiques. On a clear day the beach views back towards the mountains are superb.

Evening

Finish with a sunset walk or dinner along English Bay, one of the best places in the city to watch the sky change colour over the water before your trip ends.

Where to stay

Downtown and the West End keep you within walking distance of Stanley Park, the seawall and the main sights, making them the most convenient base. Yaletown is stylish and central, ideal for dining and nightlife. Kitsilano offers a calmer, beachside feel with a local, residential character if you prefer somewhere quieter.

Practical tips

  • Rain is frequent outside summer, so pack a waterproof layer whatever the season.
  • The SkyTrain, buses and SeaBus are efficient; a stored-value Compass Card covers all of them.
  • Renting a bike is one of the best ways to see the seawall and waterfront.
  • Summer is busy, so book popular attractions and restaurants ahead.
  • The outdoors is the main event, so build flexibility around the weather.

Vancouver is a city best enjoyed at a gentle pace, letting the landscape set the mood. Three days give you a satisfying mix of urban life and wild scenery that few destinations can match. For more trails, neighbourhood tips and seasonal advice, read our full Vancouver travel guide.
