MCT — Muscat — Taxi Fare Guide

Muscat International Airport (MCT) has an official regulated taxi rank directly outside arrivals. Oman's official airport taxis are state-regulated and increasingly use a digital taximeter, so fares are metered rather than a single flat rate. The meter typically starts from a base of around OMR 1.5 plus roughly OMR 0.25 per kilometre, and many drivers will also quote a fixed price for common destinations.

Muscat is a large, spread-out city, so the fare depends heavily on where you are going. A ride to the Ruwi / Muttrah / central business area typically runs about OMR 8–12, while Al Khuwair, Qurum and the ministries district are usually a little less. Longer trips to hotel areas near the airport or out to Al Mouj can range higher. Always agree on either the meter or a fixed price before departing, as unmetered negotiation is still common.

Expect trips of roughly 20–40 minutes to central Muscat depending on the district and traffic. There is generally no formal luggage surcharge, though late-night rides and pre-booked hotel cars cost more. Official orange-and-white airport taxis are the safe choice; avoid informal offers inside the terminal.

Ride-hailing is more limited than in the Gulf's bigger cities. Careem operates in Muscat and the local app OTaxi (Mwasalat) is widely used for regulated fares; Uber is generally not available in Oman. Booking through OTaxi or Careem can give you a clearer upfront price than a street taxi.

Practical tips: Carry small Omani rial notes, insist on the meter or confirm a fixed fare first, use the OTaxi or Careem app for transparency, and take the Mwasalat A1 bus if you want the cheapest route into the city.
