At Galeão International Airport (GIG), the safest way to take a taxi is to use the official taxi company counters inside the Arrivals halls on the ground floor of Terminals 1 and 2. You pay a fixed, pre-set fare at the desk and are then directed to your licensed driver outside the terminal (Gate A for domestic, Gate D for international). Metered radio taxis also wait just outside Arrivals. Never accept rides from touts who approach you inside the terminal offering a taxi or transfer, as these are unlicensed and overcharge.

Expect a flat fare of roughly R$140–190 to Copacabana, Ipanema and the South Zone beaches, and around R$110–140 to Centro (downtown). Metered fares can be cheaper (about R$70–90 to Centro) but vary with traffic; a nighttime tariff (Bandeira 2) applies after 21:00, on Sundays and holidays, adding roughly 20%. Luggage and airport access fees may be included in flat rates. The ride takes 40–70 minutes depending on traffic.

Ride-hailing is widely used and generally reliable in Rio. Uber and 99 both operate at GIG with a dedicated pick-up zone; fares to the South Zone typically run R$50–90, usually cheaper than a taxi. Request the car only after you exit to the designated app pick-up area and confirm the plate and driver name before boarding.

Practical tips: Only use the official taxi desk or an app-arranged car; ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal. Agree the fare or confirm the meter before departing, keep valuables out of sight, and have small bills ready as drivers rarely give change for large notes. At night, drivers may roll slowly through red lights for safety — this is normal in Rio.
